Temporary Halt and Prospects: Marelli's Italian Factory Closure

Oct 26, 2023

Marelli, an automotive component manufacturer owned by private equity firm KKR, temporarily halted the closure of its Italian factory to seek potential buyers. Last month, Marelli announced plans to shut down its factory producing internal combustion engine parts, citing the business as unsustainable amid the transition to electric vehicles. Concerns heightened over the potential impact on thousands of jobs in Italy's automotive supply sector due to the shift toward electric cars. Marelli paused the closure process of its Crevalcore factory in Italy and revealed on Tuesday that it has engaged an advisor to find potential buyers for the plant, which employs around 230 workers. Following discussions with Italy's Ministry of Industry and Labor, labor unions, and representatives from the Emilia-Romagna region, Marelli expressed its commitment to 'find a solution ensuring industrial and employment continuity' for the Crevalcore plant. While the plan to cease operations at the Crevalcore factory hasn't been retracted, Tuesday's decision grants stakeholders more time to prevent the factory's closure, originally anticipated around the end of this year.
